I also confirm. I solved the problem with downgrading bash, as explained

I can confirm that downgrading bash fixes the problem.
I have to point out that bash=3.2-0ubuntu17 is in hardy-proposed updates.

any users are shown in gdm and in the fast user swich applet in the gnome

The problem seem to be with the bash package.
Downgrading to bash=3.2-0ubuntu16 makes the users visible in gdm and fast user
swich applet
