I believe I experienced the same thing with nautilus 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu4
on Jaunty. After the connection timed out, I tried to unmount the share
from the desktop but the desktop locked up and then I got this error:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible caus
We are closing this bug report as it lacks the information, described in
the previous comments, we need to investigate the problem further.

the issue seems to be a compiz one rather, whatever gvfs or nautilus are
doing doesn't impact on alt-tab, what desktop effects option do you use?
do you get the issue without those?

No, you can't alt-tab or use the gnome-panel or switch workspace. You
can move the cursor and the clock still increments in seconds on the
panel fine.
If it isn't a nautilus issue then I guess its a gvfs issue, I don't know
how to tell though.

what do you mean the desktop is locked? can't you use alt-tab or the
gnome-panel? what you describe doesn't seem to be a nautilus issue, and
your comment about KDE is not a constructive behaviour

I'm finding it really difficult to get a good stacktrace due to not
being able to task switch while the desktop is locked.

Thank you for your bug report. Not confirmed on hardy, nautilus itself
is doing asynchronous calls, what nautilus* packages are installed? It
might be due to some nautilus feature you installed which is not in the
default installation. Could you get a stacktrace when it's hanging?
