I should note that the network manager errors disappeared when I
upgraded to 0.7.0, and GDM isn't crashing anymore.

That may have fixed it. I logged in three times and didn't experience
this problem. It's sporadic sometimes, though. I'll let you know.
Also, about 80% of the time when I try to shut down, it hangs on
"running local boot scripts (/etc/rc.local)" and I have to press the
power button to force it
Have you tried what I posted earlier? Go to System->Admin->Login Window
and change the background log in image. For me, after that it works
great.

I'm experiencing a similar problem, except with Intel video hardware.
Since I upgraded to Hardy, on the first login attempt, it looks like GDM
is simply crashing and resets to the login window. I don't see any
error messages though. I see a few messages like I usually do when I
log out and go ba

I experience a similar crash with intel video hardware.
The following has happened for me on two systems, a Dell GX100 and a
compaq of similar age.
1) Install using the alternate installer preseeded to pull in the
following additional packages: ubuntu-restricted-extras edubuntu-desktop
edubuntu-a
[SOLVED] at least for me.
Coincidentally, I used the System->Admin->Login Window to change the background
image. Now, gdm no longer crash on first log in.
By the way, where is the configuration file for this gdm login (if any).
I would like to diff my current one with the previous (crash version)
