I installed gvfs-fuse and the fuse-mounted directory in ~/.gvfs/ is browsable
via a shell without a problem.
Browsing the folder in nautilus works but is very slow.
Accessing the folder with the desktop shortcut or "places->sftp on ... " does
still not work.

I only wanted to add, that this occurs very randomly. On a fresh reboot
I seldom had problemes with connecting, the problemes occured when
browsing into the folder structure.

Correction: I tried "gvfs-mount sftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (your first
suggestion), it mounted fine and I could browse the folders with
Nautilus. I left off the "sftp://"; earlier.
When I then tried "nautilus sftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in the command line
once again, I had to force quit

works fine.
If I try to browse to a different sftp location or server in Nautilus I
get the Nautilus lock up and after a long delay the Dbus error.

I tried to mount using gvfs-mount and got an error stating that gvfs-bin was
not installed. I installed gvfs-bin and giolib.
I am now able to mount using gvfs-mount.
$gvfs-mount -l
Mount(0): sftp on caracol.ohsu.
Thanks for the bug, please don't post "confirm" unless you're adding
details about your setup which will be helpful for us to solve this
problem. Some diagnostic information that would be helpful to have here
would be:
What happens if you try to mount the location with gvfs-mount (consult --help).
