With poppler-data installed it shows garbage characters all over the
place. Some of them were graphic characters, and others looked like
numbers from Unicode. Seems like xpdf is still the solution.

What needs to be done (in my point of view, at least) is for evince to
display a warning like "CJK font support is included in the non-free
package poppler-data, which is currently not installed on your system"
in these cases.
I have made the same comment upstream (in debian and freedesktop)...

i had a similar problem and it went away by installing (on intrepid)
poppler-data. might be a try.

Not sure which way you're handling this, but the bug is still present in
the default document viewer as of today. However, my workaround was to
install the xpdf viewer, and it handles the Japanese without any
problems.

Thanks for your report, Since it's a non public information and it
contains bank information, may you please look for another pdf that
shows the issue? otherwise we cannot help to get this fixed, thanks in
