I am having this exact problem with an up-to-date Jaunty.
GDM logs say:
error setting MTRR (base = 0xe000, size = 0x1000, type = 1) Invalid
argument (22)
ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
And a lot of:
exaCopyDirty: Pending damage region empty!

I'm no longer experiencing this bug with up-to-date hardy. Please reopen

I can confirm this behavior with an up to date Hardy installed from
Alpha 3, Compiz enabled, NVIDIA GeForce Go6200 with nvidia-glx-new.
