No problem...
I've since realized that Ubuntu has the a module loaded by default to
control the frequency of AMD CPU's.
I run an Intel CPU so I disabled it. Everything seems to be fine since I
took this step.

Hello fiddled with it a little more and got the Log Out window back
However...
It is very slow to load
Still wondering what went wrong corrupt module not sure?
