Found the following CLI commands on an Internet blog with a similar
issue. The missing menus are restored and they survive rebooting.
However, make certain that any unsaved data in open desktop applications
(Libreoffice, gedit, etc.) are saved prior to executing as this process
can close active app
Reinstalled ubuntu-desktop package through Synaptic. Missing global and
in-app menus in some applications (i.e. terminal, video, GIMP - but some
like Synaptic, Firefox are unaffected) are restored after logging off
and logging back in. If I reboot, menus are missing again.
