I can confirm this bug and the solution posted above. In my case I had to do:
cp /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.orig.dpkg-new
~/.config/menus/applications.menu
And I used to have ubuntustudio Gutsy and removed it just before upgrading in
order do a normal upgrade of ubuntu-desktop.

closing, that doesn't look a gnome-menus bug and works now, either your
menu editor wrote broken datas, the menu got corrupted or ubuntustudio
does weird menu changes.

after upgraded my system and removed all my old ubuntustudio packages ,
I also created a user. Now it works.

A work-around for me was to copy /usr/share/ubuntustudio-
menu/applications.menu into my .config/menus directory. Obviously this
won't work for non Ubuntustudio users, but copying
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu (attached) to ~/.configs/menus/ will do
the same job for standard Ubuntu.

Marking this as confirmed as this has also happened to me after the
latest batch of updates. I see the same error in .xsession-errors as is
listed above when I try to fire up alacarte.
