Currently, to search, you either have to press ctrl-F once then enter
the search term, or you must press ctrl-F twice then enter the search
term. If you use the wrong procedure, search doesn't work. That's
unusual, error-prone, and could be easily fixed.

In addition to that, old behavior of Ctrl+F used to be to select all
text content in search box, so that what you type right after Ctrl+F
replaces a previous search. I think this is what is expected.
