Do you still see the issue in newer versions? That has been some gvfs
change to resolve those issues and it should work fine nowadays

Workaround: to unfreeze Files / Nautilus must kill the offending ssh process
ps -Af | grep ssh
will give you a list to pick from

I guess the problem root is gvfs-sftp. My secuence is:
1.- Stablish vpn connection
2.- Open remote location with nautilus thruht sftp
3.- Disconnect from vpn
4.- Suspend laptop
5.- Resume laptop
6.- Reconnect to vpn
7.- Try to start nautilus but it doesnt shows up
8.- Kill /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-sftp
