Issue appears to have been addressed in nautilus 3.6.3-0ubuntu16,
possibly earlier.
tap-selecting/opening items with Atmel touch screen left click now
functions just fine in 'Icon' and 'Compact' view.
unable to reproduce issue when tapping on file area, tapping on desktop,
maximizing window, etc.
This bug is probably related to xorg:

(the symptoms described here are the same).
I'm still unsure about why this patch isn't applyied, or how to apply it.

Because of this bug, ubuntu 12 with touchscreen is a NOGO!
BTW. maybe this has something to do with the: "Coordinate Transformation
Matrix" Bug. Using this (absolutely neccessary) setting leads to uncontrolled
cursor movements and unusable desktop.

Got perfectly the same bug here, running 12.04, gnome3 and eGalax touch
screen.
I got a hunch that this has something to do with new touch friendly
scroll bar, because in Thunar, that was installed as a replace
everything is working fine(more or less).
