This can be closed, because there is a solution to the problem. The
slowness of the system would be a separate issue.

I had not seen it among my bookmarks, but now I do see it.
It sometimes works.
So I'm wrong that there is no method for requesting to see the file operations
window. However, the method is not reliable.
I'm doing an SSD-to-SSD copy, which is slowing the system a lot.

operation, you'll get a quicklist containing an item to show the
progress window. Do you see it?
