When I checked this morning the problem had mysteriously resolved itself (probably as a result of a recent dist-upgrade) .. For the sake of comparison I'll include library versions of the 'working' evince. And the first thing that caught my attention is that libpoppler.so.4 is now libpoppler.so.5.
