I did a fresh install of Karmic on my Dell Latitude and this problem
came up. I had a similar problem with my HP netbook. I had previously
done an "upgrade" install of Karmic and the "Do Nothing" option wasn't

I just installed Jaunty on a test machine, and the Network browser

uPnP devices show up, and if I click on an MS-AD resource- it prompts me

So- it appears this whole mess is finally fixed in Jaunty.

This appears to be fixed (finally) in Jaunty.
Thanks to everyone involved.

Sorry- I just realized this was a different bug than the one I actually
meant to look up. Windows AD shares work fine now, but I don't use
password-protected SMB shares, so I can't actually confirm that this
exact bug is fixed. Sorry for the confusion.

@Peter van Heun: Is the server/share you are having trouble with
requiring authentication? That's where this problem creeps up. It
(Nautilus/gvfs) works just fine on open shares, but anything requiring
authentication will fail (and in an MS ADS network- will generally get
your account locked-out).
@dawinkley: You'd have to do a 'sudo chmod' command, it is very unlikely
that is related to the problem itself, and it is always a very-bad idea
to mess with file permissions on system-created files like this. You
would likely create a stability or security issue.

Sebastien-
If you are referring to my earlier comment- I apologize. I very much
appreciate ALL of the work that the volunteer developers and organizers
put into Ubuntu. Without all of you, Ubuntu wouldn't happen, and I'm
pretty sure we all realize this. My frustration lies in the fact that

I installed Debian Etch on a test machine, and this problem doesn't
exist. Either they figured out how to fix it, or they didn't use the
same buggy gvfs implementation that Ubuntu is. I haven't tried a "from

Agreed/Ditto. I've pretty much given up on it. The best "solution" I've
found is to set up shortcuts to every share I use, since browsing is
pretty much impossible. This isn't really Ubuntu's fault since it is a
problem with an upstream vendor, but it's a bit ridiculous that this bug

This whole mess is actually WORSE in Intrepid right now. In Hardy, there
was at least the option of manually attaching to the share using the
"Connect to server..." dialog. That doesn't work in Intrepid.(!) One
gets the usual errant "Cannot display location..." error message, but it

Unfortunately a gvfs update hit the repositories in the last couple of

to fix.
I'm not blacklisting gvfs from updates because I keep hoping it will get

I followed Renzo's instructions and the two problems I reported earlier

Couldn't have said it better myself. Somewhere along the line- I missed
the "build-dep" command. I was able to compile it, but it took close to

I guess I should have mentioned the other reason I didn't use the binary

I need to compile it on another machine, so I will try to better
document the packages and steps I used to get the compile to work. I'll
post that here when I can. Unfortunately ther
I had a hard time collecting all the dependencies and getting autogen to

able to get it the patched version of gvfsd-smb-browse compiled and

Sorry, you are correct. While it appears to be related, and started

problem.

I hadn't tried not including a username. My experience with Windows

I've noticed a couple of other things...
As said earlier- you can mount a share if you use "Places => Connect to
server" and then use an actual share name. There is no way to browse
shares through Nautilus. This is a real pain if you have a large network
with lots of servers and shares.
