I can confirm that nemo sftp is painfully slow. I hadn't paid attention
to it until recently, but it's transferring at around 30 kb/s. The same
transfer using filezilla fstp is at least 10 times faster.

Sorry for posting so much, but I've discovered something new:
After launching a fullscreen app and closing it again, the panel and
dock are visible. I think the problem is that gnome-panel and docky
think I'm in fullscreen. The same tooltips that docky keeps showing even
when invisible are also vi
It isn't the first time that it happened to me, but I have no idea how
to reconstruct it. I'm not using compiz, it's uninstalled. I'm using
metacity with compositing enabled.

I'm not sure if I'm still allowed to comment on this old bug, but it
happened to me today.
Ubuntu 10.04, panel suddenly became invisible.
Same behaviour, when I click the place where the buttons should be, the menu
pops up.
Docky is also invisible, but works when I click the correct location.
I seem to have the same problem.

I confirm this bug, it's happened to me a couple of times now, but
usually times out in around 2-3 mins. In the meantime I usually login
via another terminal and use links to browse around :)
It's an incredibly annoying issue!
