It's hard to reproduce "at will". I personally run Firefox, Thunderbird,
Chrome, gedit, gjiten, skype, pidgin, Gnome Terminal, and always have
something like 20 windows open at a time on my main workspace.
Of note :

3.14), and it seems metacity and gtk+-3.0 will require a ton of

I have the same problem but it seems to stabilize at 788Mb.
But if I try to zoom, evince tried to use all my memory.
I' attached a pdf causing the problem.

I found the problem. When upgrading to Dapper, a new user called
haldaemon was created. However it was not part of the cdrom group, and so
couldn't access /dev/cdrom. I solved the problem by typing the command:
adduser haldaemon cdrom
Now it works fine. I still think it's an upgrade bug. The hal
