Had several "out of nowhere" incidents like this: suddenly all
applications and the current user session were gone and i was thrown
into the login screen. After the re-login, the former user session was
not available any more.

I guess rasman is right.. it should be something related to
hibernation.. it might not have saved the user's state properly.. or the
user(the reporter) might have done something wrong before hibernation..

Dell Inspiron 525 Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex,
Hibernate just locks the system. Nothing else.
I installed a dual boot (rather than via Wubi) only for enabling Hibernation;
but it fails :|
