Works now.
I don't know if it was the latest updates or going back and re-entering
the "false" comment noted in comment #13 under gksudo rather than sudo.

Tried fix (comment 13). Did not work for me. Still about 25-30 second
hang on first use of Thunar.
I don't know if it matters, but I have Ubuntu/Unity installed as an
alternate desktop.
