There appears to be another patch from Stef Walter
this time to gkr-async and the title of the patch is
fix race condition.
I would suspect it will get to ubuntu in the next day or
so. The comment from one of the debian testers was
that it fixed the login etc. problems, however, the original

Yes someone previously said that those of us using an Nvidia card seem
to have the problem.
That is correct, at least for me. I can never get gnome desktop to display
until i kill gnome-keyring proc on my Nvidia card machine, with Ubuntu
restricted Nvidia drivers.

Let me rephrase that.
We have reports on both Hardy and Gutsy havine the same problem, so i will
reinstall and perform the same tests on both Hardy and Gutsy.
I have enough computers that I can leave both of them as they
are after testing in case we need to perform further testing.

I have perused about 200 bug reports this weekend and that have seen various
flavors of this problem
but as far as I can see the main issues are

I just loaded Hardy daily-live 1/1/08 on an Asus P5VD2 MX SE Motherboard
that has Via UniChrome Pro IGP on board Video and gdm
problem does not exist.
gdm works fine, on initial boot after install
and all subsequent boot up, gnome desktop displays
etc. etc., saves current desktop for use on
I said things work perfectly using my little one line shell
not quite so.
All application, file explorer, etc. windows are locked to upper
left of display just under top bar (containing Application, Places, System etc.)
and cant be moved
no resize, move to other desktop etc. no window decoration
close this bug it is identical to 157622 and i commented there

I have almost the exact same problem with hardy fresh install
hardy daily a/o 1/1/08 also occurred in hardy 12/31/07
dont know about alpha2 did not test it

due to my inexperience with gnome desktop i have

after more investigation i found that i could do the following
get to console 1 via CNTL-ALT + 1
login as normal user not root
execute sudo gdm
gdm starts up
switch to console 7
login as same normal user
get gold screen with white mouse cursor
then
CNTL+ATL + 2
login as normal user
execute
after much testing and googling i have determined that
gdm is running but the first desktop window that has the
gnome look (i.e. application, places, system etc.)
is not there. all i have is a gold screen with
a white mouse cursor and no buttons etc. on the mouse
are active.
