Yes, it was specifically in Trusty 14.04 that this issue was found, in
May of 2014. Due to the Gedit and Dash issues with SCIM, I had to leave
using SCIM and use Fcitx instead. For the last 2 years I've been using
Fcitx.
As to your second question, I would need to make SCIM the active input
method
No but brother printers consistently show problems - if you do a
bugzilla search you'll see quite a few hits and as far as I know we have
no triagers that have a brother printer (I avoid them like the plague
because it's obvious they have issues in Linux)

Until this scim-gedit bug is fixed, for anyone needing a work-around,
the Fcitx works very well in gedit. Both Ibus and scim have issues, but
Fcitx seems to be working great.

architecture interacts with gedit-- rather than the m17n package. This
indeed seems likely, for the following reasons:
1) m17n package works fine in gedit when used through ibus or Fcitx. So

I see similar with my Lenovo x201 running Lucid. Often, if I suspend
with AC adapter attached then wake up without AC adapter the Gnome-
Power-Manager will show power consumption 10x too high and battery
'Energy when full' 10x too high. Consequently, the battery indicator
icon will show 10% charge.

I have loaded ubuntu fiesty on my mac ppc and every morning when i start
the comp, the date gets reset to 1904/01/01 and nautilus crashes too
asking if the applets are to be deleted. It doesn't work until I type in
"killall bonobo-activation server" and restart nautilus using Alt-F2.
Any solutions
