I get the same error messages from Evince with the same procedure. This
must have been caused by some updates that came in August because before
that I didn't get these messages on the same latex project.

As a workaround you can add
"xset r rate 200 60"
to /etc/rc.local
before the exit 0 command. Google etc rc.local for more information.
200 is the delay and 60 is the repeat rate in milliseconds. (My
settings).
I think it problem should disappear if you connect your keyboard

I can reproduce this:
1) Boot laptop with usb keyboard attached
2) Modify key repeat rates and delays to your preference using GUI
3) Unplug keyboard and replug keyboard
On both my laptops running Karmic, the delay and repeat are reset.

I have this problem too in Okular. The results are slightly better when
I don't use T1 fonts in Latex as per this bug report

but still the fonts in Okular from latex-generated documents are thin
and weak.
