I screwed up and didn't add the following information:
System: Mac G4 Cube
Speakers: USB, came with the system.
Rhythmbox plays back audio CD from external CD drive, no sound, although the CD
was earlier tested under 6.06.1 LTS and replayed just fine (sound OK, etc.)

Public bug reported:
Using ubuntu 7.04ppc desktop cd, was trying to see why sound wasn't
working with ALSA, got error message to report bug. Sound has worked out
of the box with both 5.10 and 6.06 LTS.
