Confirmed totem wasn't upgraded properly from oneiric and was broken.
Removing and reinstalling resolved issue.

Looks like it's trying to open Synaptic on 11.10, which isn't installed
by default. Installing Synaptic fixes this, but is obviously a
workaround.

I believe I also have this bug on my Inspiron E1505 running Hardy AMD64.
This machine has intel graphics and wireless. This slowdown happens to
me whether i'm copying to either of my USB drives or over the wired or
wireless network.
The wired network didn't seem to slow down until about 600MB if

With a default install of Gutsy, with mythbuntu-desktop installed also
(Mythbuntu uses XFCE). When gnome-session is updated, on next login,
the default session has been changed to default XFCE (not the mythbuntu
session)
