As per Murphy's (or whoever) Law, after filing the bug I've found the
solution/work-around.
I went into the Gimp preferences and added ~/.fonts to the fontpath.
After that Gimp seemed to function normally, though I haven't tested
everything.
The question remains, however, as to why it wouldn't wo

I am unable to use any of the tools in the Gimp 2.6 toolbox. Clicking on
the tool and then trying to use it produces nothing. I am able to

The situation as I see it now is that if (say, in Bluefish) I want to
save a file as 'filename.htm' I choose 'save as' and the original
'filename' is highlighted so that I can type over it if I want (though
I'm not sure why it assumes I always want to keep the same htm
'extension'). That much wor

But that presumably means I can't use Claws-mail, which is a fork of and
is superior to the Ubuntu-provided Sylpheed.
