Well, it was too early to shout a "woohoo"...
Outcome is inconsistent, sometimes it logs my system off, sometimes it
just "blacks out" Kodi when running a video.
About the change back to X-Org? Sure: google "ubuntu 18 x-org"

Well, about two weeks before the change back to x-org they fixed wayland
and this bug does not affect me anymore. Fantastic!
