Is this the same bug that causes the screen to go black when watching a video
in full screen mode? Same cause?

I too have the above symptoms in unity.
However, in gnome-shell the system loads fine but when the pointer is moved to
top left to get the Applications menu, the desktop crashes and defaults to
fallback.
