However, I couldn't tell when I was submitting because 508452 does seem

I just checked what would happen if I switched to "Normal" Visual
Effects. After making the switch, the System Monitor window started
painting properly again (so did Gnome Do) which leads me to conclude
that this may be metacity bug because I know that "Normal" uses Compiz.

I should add that the window is still responsive to input. For example,
I know roughly where the "X" button is so I'm able to close the window.
