When I started the help program (Desktop Menu --> System --> About
Ubuntu), I expected the help system to contain human readable menus and
menu list it

After some digging and playing with the settings, it looks like this bug
depends on the GTK style settings in the user preferences.
The default setting (System Settings->Appearance->GTK Styles and Fonts) is to
use the KDE styles. This setting results in uncleared tiles appearing the same
color
The problem appears to be related to more than just switching card
types. The window is also slow to redraw when maximizing or returning to
default size (an approximate 5 second delay before redraw on my
machine).
