I'm not able to get apport to work, through nautilus or otherwise.
In nautilus the .crash file is opened with the text editor.
Using `/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk
--crash-file=_usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.crash` I get a window showing
me the report, but when I click "send" nothing happens!

I did reboot before trying. Nothing changed with gnome-control-center.
I used "usermod" to change the uid.
Then I used "find / -user 501 -exec chown -h kms {} \;" to change any other
files in the filesystem.

I just had the system freeze up on me again after less than 5 minutes.
This time, when doing ctrl-alt-F3 I got the strange snow-like screen depicted
in the attachement and none of the ctrl-alt terminals or GDM (at ctrl-alt-F1)
showed anything but snow!

I can kill gnome-shell with "kill -KILL" from a ctrl-alt terminal.
The GDM screen then appears as usual. Logging in again, however, seems to hang
on a blank purple screen.

Some more notes:
- you don't need to ssh to get this behavior. it is the only way i know of to
consistently reproduce the problem, however.
- if you change desktops and come back to the terminal, then the
contents appear OK.

refreshed.

4) note that when you load gnome the setting is put to "ondemand"
