I was able to resolve this problem by reinstalling all of the mutter
packages that had been upgraded using synaptic. Drag and drop and the
slightly altered look of Nautilus have been corrected.

file drag and drop. You cannot select or even move the file(s) to
another Nautilus window. Right context window commands still function.

graphic in Nautilus fails to display status of the transfer. Eventually

eog (image viewer) in Ubuntu 16.04 won't display large (~5.0 mb filesize
or larger) jpg images. It used to work fine with images from my Canon
T3i DSLR now it just displays a blank screen. eog still works with
