it freezes in other DE's as well, it only seems to freeze when you try
to transfer a file, or connect a device to it.

I am experiencing this same problem with this Bluetooth dongle i got
from eBay.
this happens on both 11.10 and 12.04 Beta 2(i have on my netbook)
this has to be one of the most bizarre problems...
