I now think this to be my fault (surprise). I removed the complaining
libraries (which may have been left over from an install from source,
instead of dapper packages) and now everything is fine.

This also happens when I attempt to start last-exit, leading me to think
that either the two programs share some buggy code, or that it is truly
a gstreamer bug.
