Screen refreshes uncontrollably, making it very unpleasant to use.
12.04 broke Virtualbox, now got past that by reinstalling, but can't use
browser in Virtualbox full screen because of this problem.

Possibly not the same problem, but I had set up auto-login for a new
user without thinking about it. Going back into user manager and
switching off auto-login appears to have fixed my gdm issue.
