I've had the same problem since upgrading to 16.04. It looks like the
dropdown list from the Open tab is showing the recent files, but not the
File->Open Recent menu item.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 X86_64. I
upgraded to Thunderbird 3.1 (32-bit), & when it starts I get the
following errors:
$ /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird -profilemanager
