My workaround is to have two VMs with Karmic Koala, one with Glade in
which GStreamer doesn't work and one with GStreamer in which Glade is
not installed. I do my development in the first and execution in the
second. I have not found a way for the two to coexist.

On a fresh installation of Ubuntu 9.10, the command
python -c "import gst"
produces no output.
Now, install glade (3.6.7-1ubuntu1) using Synaptic (and all the
dependencies Synaptic wants to install). Issue the command above. You
will now get the output:

This problem occurred when I upgraded to 9.10 RC (I wrote 9.04 RC above,
but I meant 9.10). When I did a clean installation of 9.10, the problem
did not occur. I suspect that pollution unique to my system accounts
for the problem, so I recommend ignoring my report.
