I don't why these files have been corrupted, it was a normal upgrade
from 8.04 to 8.10
I had a bad file in the /var/lib/dpkg/info folder, it was blocking the
installation.

It's a ext3 FS, here is the fstab line:
/dev/sda2 / ext3defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
It's not a wubi installation, but an upgrade of a 8.04 installation.

For me , it seems that removing the line
Option "XkbVariant" "basic"
from xorg.conf
and reconfiguring the keyboard in gnome solved the problem.
(I think it has been an upgrade problem from Gutsy to Hardy
