Since I first reported this bug, I've noticed that I also encounter it
on a fairly minimal Openbox system where I'm using setxkbmap to manage
the keyboard layouts. Which suggests that it may not be a Gnome-Shell
issue at all.
I've also got a Xubuntu 20.04 VM, and I'm not having these problems with

However, in 20.04, I’m noticing th
PPA package is also working in an eoan QEMU/KVM vm which was locking up
with the standard packages.
I also ran into a lockup problem on the ISO file when installing. Not
sure if it's related to this or not.

I've noticed the same thing in Ubuntu 12.04.
Incidentally, the application doesn't even have to be misbehaving for
this to happen. I opened gedit, did nothing with it, and then used
"force quit" on it. Everything locked up and I had to restart X.
