@Chris: I'm pretty sure I killed gnome-settings-daemon, but it's long-
gone out of my history now, so I can't confirm.
BTW, although the problem was intermittent in the first place, I don't
think I've seen it for a while.

Two things.
1. My problem was seemingly temporary, as a reboot fixed the problem.
2. I was advised that even if I do experience the problem again, I should
report it in its own bug, as mine is different release of Ubuntu.
So, continue to disregard my comments. ;-)

I just started getting this in Jaunty, after an auto-update which I
believe included a kernel update.
Not sure if this is a known bug in Jaunty, too, and/or if Jaunty's got
its own issue associated with it.
