Ok. Found anouther symptom. This doesn't appear to be a nautalis bug.
When I run gedit I don't get a window. My display is set correctly.
jkary@jkary-ubu2:~/src/ubuntu/nautilus/src$ echo $DISPLAY
:0
jkary@jkary-ubu2:~/src/ubuntu/nautilus/src$ gedit
^C
jkary@jkary-ubu2:~/src/ubuntu/nautilus/src
It appears to be some sort of configuration file issue. I tried to load
gnome display manager and all I get is a blank screen. Any hints on
whay layer to look at next?

I recently upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 and nautilus will no longer
launch. I can't see any bugs at the command line and the process
appears to be running.
