1. Yes, simply open up search or search and replace.
2. Press Control+H, or Control+F, or goto Search>Find or Search>Replace

Text field(s) for search boxes are disabled (greyed out)

Binary package hint: gedit
When I go to Search or Search and Replace, all text fields for the
windows that open are disabled, and thus cannot have anything entered
into them, to perform a search.
