Currently gdm starts regardless of the status of acpid. When X starts
it looks for /var/run/acpid.socket and emits a warning in X.org.log when
it is not found:

Up until this morning I have been testing Xubuntu Intrepid amd64
desktop, updated to yesterday afternoon. I use a Microsoft Bluetooth
Notebook Mouse 5000. There were no problems with it in that

Positive feedback. On a Dell 1420 w/GeForce 8400M GS. Used the latest
daily-live (amd64 desktop) which must have included the hardy-proposed
package, because it wasn't listed in update-manager.
I can suspend / hibernate multiple times without the white screen.

The Beta 173.08 nvidia driver does not resolve the issue, I tested it
yesterday. So it does not look likely we will see results for awhile.
