regards to Signal, I have noticed that enabling the setting 'Draw
attention to this window when a notification arrives' will generate an

it is possible to dismiss them by clicking the 'clear all' button or by
dismissing individual notifications. When messages are dismissed, it

After mounting samba shares through gvfs-smbd, e.g. by typing
smb://server/share in the nautilus file manager, I experience occasional
freezes in nautilus lasting anywhere up to 20-30 seconds. During this
time it's not possible to browse folders or open new nautilus instances.
If you're only using your Online Accounts for Empathy integration, try
removing the following 4 packages: evolution-data-server, evolution-
data-server-online-accounts, gnome-contacts, and libfolks-eds25.

@pauls: that's a great find and I can confirm that syncing "brightness"
to "actual_brightness" at boot time fixes the problem. I just had to
make a small modification to the script for it to work on karmic:

It seems that this is somehow related to the converted pdf that is
generated from the original by evince/cups and sent for printing. When I
do 'print to pdf' in evince and then try to print the resulting file
(which is identical to the spool file generated by evince) using lpr,

with evince it can take up to half an hour before the first page emerges
from the printer. Preparation of the print job in evince itself is fast
(i.e. the progress bar only app

When copying files from a gvfs-mounted folder on an sftp server, I often
experience panel crashes at the exact moment that the progress bar
appears. The panel reloads/refreshes immediately, but the icon

didn't have any poweroffs or evolution crashes that might have triggered
a database corruption. I have also already tried to delete all index
files and folders.db, which fixes the problem on existing emails, but

.ibex.index.data of the mail folders in question and let evolution
rebuild them, the missing icons do show up correctly again. However any
new emails will again suffer from the same problem.
