the contents of the linked folder are lost. The linked folder itself
remains but is empty,

It was happening every time but is not now - I'm not sure whether an
update fixed it or something I did (I can't remember when it stopped
happening - I run standard Ubuntu Hardy too). I'll see if I can find
out.
I am not using the colours from system theme but I did change the
colours to black on
I can't find "taskbar" in the "Add to panel" list but I have added
"Window List" and this gives me what I need.
I've also added "Workspace Switcher" successfully. So it seems I can
build the functionality I desire.
Maybe the lack of bottom panel by default isn't a bug but a design
feature but I
