I did as you suggested (the file was indeed all comments), but it didn't

I have some documents originating from Microsoft Word, with embedded
subsetted fonts. These fonts are not rendered (leaving blank areas) in
evince. The program prints several messages on stderr, indicating a
problem with fonts:
some font thing failed

When I log in, sometimes the top panel layout (the right hand side) is
messed up. The shutdown button is completely gone and the arrangement of
the other applets is not as it was when I logged out. This happened
several times, so now it's time
Issue seems to be solved. I've tried to reverse the workaround I applied
and tested by looking up a word in the local dictionary. It worked.
