For some reason, my headphones began working automagically last night.
No idea why, but now everything works fine. Gnome-volume-control
doesn't crash anymore, and the headphone shows up in output and is
selectable. Go figure.

To me, they seem related. I can "Test Speakers" on the standard audio,
but not on the headphones. I suppose a hardware driver bug could be
exposing an unrelated gnome-volume-control bug, though. All of this
worked fine in lucid & maverick.

After plugging in, Sound Preferences dialog shows in hardware tab:

If I press the button "Test Speakers", the Sound Preferences window
closes, as if crashed. No sound.
