Not being able to change the default font for whole interface is quite annoying,
furthermore when the latest Ubuntu font family pretends to offer some really
good condensed ones ;-)
Even weirder font-manager does not seem to have any problem to show them

Yes you are right, it's not limited to condensed font variant.
And it's not limited to Ubuntu as I hit the exact same issue in Budgie
23.04 ( which does not make use of gnome-shell but does use mutter and
some other gnome components. )

In Nautilus F9 key no longer hides side pane as it used to do.
This keyboard shortcut is mentioned though in [ Ctrl ] + [ ? ]

Well renaming $HOME is questionable, at least, depending on how you made it.
And the names of usual folders inside $HOME follow some conventions ( XDG,
freedesktop ) which are expected by your desktop environment and system.
It's probably your ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file which has been emptied
ok, I was not aware of : « Wayland sessions (which might include the
login screen) ».

Mmm…
I had « the bug » once yesterday.
Maybe I can narrow down a bit its context.
After using some sessions on the machine ( meaning : all sessions work
