'Wayland + nvidia drivers' seems to be very problematic...even with 510
I had to reboot in recovery and edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to disable wayland
and reinstall nvidia 470 to get a working system again.
I did enable some PPAs, for hardware like an intel realsens
I noticed gnome-shell is not up to date, but it won't update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

repository, I could now easily do the 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade.

The upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 failed later again on package gconf2
dpkg: error processing package gconf2 (--configure):
dependency problems - leaving triggers unprocessed
dpkg: dependency problems prevent processing triggers for gconf2:
gconf2 depends on python:any; ho
Also affected me.
In addition of doing the steps in comment #6 above, I had to do:
sudo cp libglib2.0-0_2.48.0-1ubuntu4_amd64.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/.
sudo cp ./usr/bin/dpkg /usr/bin/.
Then I could run
sudo apt-get -f install

After reading bug 778083 I come to the conclusion that it is
the same kind of bug. If you think it is useful you could merge
the two bug reports.
I installed the 64 bit version of Natty on another box than my
laptop with a different graphics card (can't remember offhand
which one) and the behaviou

so about 18 months later this bug still hasn't been fixed? This could
lead to serious trouble if you are editing config files on a server
through gedit like I was doing. Files can become unreadable to some
programs.
