I've got the same issue on ArchLinux with Gnome 3.2 so I guess it's not
related to Ubuntu at all. You should report this issue upstream on
bugzilla.gnome.org.

So I've done some more testing. It appears that when I'm on same local network,
the hang only lasts for a few seconds (still annoying though). It freezes when
the computer with cups server is shutdown but not when the ipp printer is
switch off.

disable it ;)
This bug has recently happened with Freenx session (since the last kernel
