an explicitly decided change somewhere.
IMO, if we cannot find out why this happened, we should let sysrq
regress in kernel default settings until we find the right fix, rather
than a long standing default UI binding.
one idea
this is clearly a regression. we use alt+printscreen for ages ... in
lucid it worked.

if height=0 is a valid condition, the loop could also just do a "while
(height && tile_pos <= width+x_step-2)" ...
at least the other style type (->style = 2) seems to not end in such a
loop if height = 0.

so from what i see the drawing loop you pasted in comment #11 is an
infinite loop because as the backtrace in comment #6 shows, height = 0
... which causes stroke_width = 0 ... which means that tile_pos + =

i think the right fix for gdm would be to not check for UID, but rather
whether an account is a "login" account ... i took a quick look and
while there is a API way to parse passwd, getting the same for shadow
was a bit less easy ... and gdm would need to run as root (from what i
remember now).

1. remove all firefox (karmic)
2. install abrowser-3.0-branding firefox-3.0-gnome-support firefox-3.0
4. enable ppa and dist-upgrade
verified:
1. abrowser still works and all is updated to 3.5
other verified ...:
1. abrowser-3.0-branding ships abrowser.deskt
correction on 2nd: the panel icon technically disappeared, but the
reason for that is that the initial firefox-3.0-branding package comes
from karmic which shipped a legacy .desktop file called
firefox-3.0.desktop. verified that the .desktop file in jaunty
firefox-3.0-branding is called firefox.des
4th test: same as 2nd test, but
1. install firefox-3.0-venkman firefox-3.0-dom-inspector in stage 2 as well
verified:
1. upgrade works fine

unix has tradition to have UIDs > 500 to be user accounts. debian
changed that for whatever reason - probably because they thoguth they
run out of uids soon.
i have a uid 501 and now i dont see my main user account anymore. I have
that uid for about 10 years and carry it around etc.
what user did
moving to gtk. network manager just uses the gtk_status_icon feature ...
if that lacks a11y its a gtk bug. but maybe also a gnome-panel
notification area bug?

nm just uses gtk_icon_theme_load_icon and passes the current screen size
in there. If that behaviour is different to what gpm does
